The introduction of the book suggested that Nina is the character who grows the most, but I’m not so convinced. A weird, but interesting experience. Those speeches seem thrown in. Irina isn’t suggesting she will actually be pursuing a career in manual labor or that it’s something she’d really enjoy doing; she’s an upperclass girl romanticizing the humble worker in the way we often romanticize “the noble poor” or “the noble savage.

Treplev, on the other hand, continues to live in the past. Find a copy in the library Finding libraries that hold this item I can’t speak to the quality of the translation but I’d recommend this volume to anyone into Russian literature.


Rocamora’s phrasing preserves some of Chekhov’s poetic rhythm in this line, and thereby also conveys something about Irina: As a devotee of more literal translations preserving participles, poetics, etc.

Hoping to get my hands on a translation by Frayn as well! Reading the plays for the first time in many years, the irony comes through very strongly, but maybe that’s just one of the strengths of this translation which, in British English at least, comes across as easy and natural sounding. That said I find the gabbiabo of provincial Russian boredom and backwardness a bit tedious especially in a big chunk.

We know about Chekhov’s Gun don’t introduce something that you won’t use later. I had an audition for ‘Cherry Orchard’ so I thought I would read all four major plays to check off Chekhov from my list.

So, from a few lines, this seems like an almost futile analysis: It is not gabgiano that The Seagull continues to be performed frequently, Reading this play “The Seagull” was the play included on the Powys list, and the only one read from the collection was like a breath of fresh air after Dante.


For example, later in this scene Senelick’s translation of Olga’s line, “How dreadfully inappropriate! I’ve forgotten everything, everything.

However, the themes seemed very similar, so that none of the plays seemed wholly unique. Reading a play always seems a bit wrong to me; I know I’m missing essentials.

Or, rather, I probably could but it would be endless and personal and boring. Treplev truly loves, but lost in his misery and self-accusation, is unable to come to terms with the fact that Nina does not love him. The family was forced to move to Moscow following his father’s bankruptcy.

Here’s one more little note: These plays are filled with humor albeit dry, Russian humor and poverty and social struggles. It also seemed ahead of its time for its play within a play format talking about a post-apocalyptic landscape that could be used to focus on environmental issues today.
