Pattanaik does nothing extraordinary with the material, but the material itself is so powerful, it needs very little to work its magic on the reader. Else, an 11 year old reading it all by herself may find it heavy read, may lose interest or may not be able to understand the deeper, philosophical message contained in the book. The scope is ertelling vast and there are so many characters that typically most interpretations just skim the events and dwell on the famous warring cousins, the Pandavas and the Kauravas.
Talking of society, this book also gives us perspectives and narratives of women who are a part of the epic. The little notes that Devdutt has added gives us a perspective to how the story influenced as well as got influenced by people of various times.

As a story, it is better written than Jaya, though Jaya has more information packed into it. Awesome were past few days mahaabharata with this book. But such a large epic I wasn’t sure if I wanted to boggle my head with so many names of Kings and queens and plots. A must read, for sure.
That way the illustrafed I think it would be more appropriate for an older person say one of the parents or grandparents to read and explain it to a 11 year old.
